Stand-up comedian Simon Brodkin, or probably better known as his alter-ego ‘Lee Nelson’ has recently been charged with pitch encroachment when Everton played Man City last Saturday.
Brodkin is the host of popular BBC3 show ‘Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show’ where he does a stand-up act playing a chav in front of a live audience. As part of the show he also has other pre-recorded sketches in which he plays a number of characters. Including a Scouse footballer named ‘Jason Bent’ who plays the lead role in a spoof reality show ’110% Bent’. ‘Bent’ is a vain and idiotic portrayal of what some people may view the professional footballer.
According to reports, Brodkin was in full character as ‘Bent’ when he somehow made his way past security and onto the pitch at Goodison Park. Dressed in full Man City attire he began warming up with the City players looking very convincing. Onlookers included Joe Hart, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri who looked on bewildered as ‘Bent’ warmed up with stretches alongside them.
It wasn’t long before match stewards caught on and he was ushered off the pitch before the match began. Reports indicate that Brodkin stayed in full character throughout the prank shouting, “just give me the first 10 minutes!” as he was ushered out by Everton’s match stewards.
The BBC made a statement: “We didn’t initially believe that Mr Brodkin was filming for the BBC but more inquiries will have to be made”. Brodkin is looking at a formal charge and will appear at Liverpool Community Justice Centre on 3rd April.
